Barbering and cosmetology in Texas are regulated by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), which issues and renews every individual, establishment and school licence in the state. The governing law is Texas Occupations Code Title 9, Chapter 1603 — Regulation of Barbering and Cosmetology, with the administrative rules TDLR adopts under it published on its laws and rules page. Every shop, salon, school and licensed professional in this directory operates under that chapter.
Chapters 1601 (barbers) and 1602 (cosmetologists) were consolidated into Chapter 1603. Guides, forms and school handbooks that still cite 1601 or 1602 are referring to superseded chapters — worth checking if you're working from older material.
